While it is important that we rebuild our homes and communities after the flood, it is equally important to take notice of our emotional health. The following is excerpted from the Canadian Mental Health Association’s document Taking Care of Your Mental Health After the Flood. See below for additional mental health resources.
The following are tips to help alleviate stress during and after disaster strikes:
- Actively seek accurate information; not knowing the facts can increase anxiety. This is one of the core objectives of the CRC Action Group.
- Take time for yourself every day, even just five or 10 minutes.
- Talk about feelings and experiences.
- Prioritize what needs to be done each day to decrease the feeling of being overwhelmed.
- Devote time to your personal relationships.
- Eat well, exercise and get enough sleep.
- Don’t be afraid to ask for extra help.
