Bow River high streamflow advisory issued near Canmore

River advisory issued due to increased water levels on Bow River

Dread.

That is the feeling that overwhelms us when we hear news such as the High Streamflow Advisory issued by Alberta Environment and Parks on Wednesday evening.

The advisory goes on to read, “There are no significant flooding concerns at the time. However, the situation will continue to be monitored and additional advisories will be issued as required.”

But the fact of the matter is, without upstream mitigation in place, advisories like this one could mean a very real and immediate threat to our communities.

We must continue to push for protection on both the Bow and the Elbow Rivers.

What you can do now!

Elbow River:

1) Write to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA) and tell them you support the Springbank Off-Stream Reservoir. We’ve drafted a letter for you – download here or copy-paste from the blog here.

2) Attend the CEAA’s open houses next week on May 22 and 24 to pledge your support for the project in-person. More info available here.

Bow River:

The Government of Albert has moved to assess three potential upstream storage options identified in the Bow River Water Management Project. However, the study is slated to take at least a year and experts don’t expect anything to be built and functioning for at least 11 years. We will call on you when there is appropriate action to be taken.

You can stay up-to-date with river advisories at rivers.alberta.ca and, as always, we will keep you updated with new developments. Thank you for your support.
