Dear MLA and Premier Kenney,
As you are aware, Calgarians continue to rebuild in the wake of the June 2013 Flood. The largest natural disaster in Alberta’s history saw some 75,000 people evacuated from their homes. Displaced, we watched the Bow and Elbow rivers spill into the streets: destroying our homes, small businesses and threatening to disable downtown. Bricks and mortar can be rebuilt, but the healing of us as affected Calgarians will take longer. Neighbours lost much, businesses failed, marriages broke down and lines of credit were tapped.
We can’t afford to let this happen again! Calgary is the economic engine for Canada.
I write to you to demand protection from future flooding – through upstream mitigation measures. If you don’t, people from coast to coast will pay the price through lost economic opportunities and higher taxes. While my family, my neighbours and our community will pay even higher costs from further financial and emotional burdens.
Do the right thing and take action now to ensure that the City of Calgary is protected from future flooding. We call on you to approve, fully fund and implement mitigation measures that will safeguard the downtown core, cherished institutions like the Calgary Zoo, Calgarians and our communities.
