Downtown flood protection and public realm improvements complete in Eau Claire area
The City of Calgary has published a news release announcing the completion of the Downtown Barrier. The Downtown Flood Barrier is a continuous 1.39km long consisting of steel sheet piles, earthen berms, concrete walls, and demountable stop log openings built to resist a 1:200 year flood event. This construction season, an estimated 3.5 million cubic metres of fill material will be moved as part of construction of the Springbank Off-stream Dam Project. After a tense week, we are now holding our breath as another storm approaches Kananaskis Country. From Monday through Wednesday, between 100 and 150 millimetres of rain was expected, and 75 millimetres of rain came to the city. The City of Calgary held a press conference this afternoon at 4:00 pm to announce that a state of emergency for the City has been declared on account of the flood risk.
