2017 Progress Toward Flood Protection
It is hard to believe we are onto our 5th Christmas post-flood. And here we still are just as vulnerable to a flood disaster as we were in 2013. However, that’s not to say progress has not been made, in particular:
- The Springbank project is well into the environmental review process, has strong support from all three levels of government and, in combination with the Glenmore Reservoir upgrade, will protect Calgary from a 2013-magnitude flood event, once built and operational.
- The Bow River has partial mitigation in place in the form of an agreement between the province and TransAlta to use the Ghost Reservoir for flood attenuation during peak flood season.
- The Bow River Working Group released its report this year outlining several other options for consideration that can provide the additional mitigation required for the Bow.
- Calgary City Council declared flood mitigation as a top priority for this City.
Thank you Members!
A big thanks is owed to our membership for your active participation in CRCAG efforts in 2017. We had an amazing turnout for our Annual General Meeting (AGM) in April. Representatives from all three levels of government, including Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi, Hon. Kathleen Ganley from the province and the Hon. Kent Hehr from the federal government, provided their strong endorsement for the Springbank project and for continuing work to find a solution for the Bow. Your attendance at this meeting helped make it a huge success.
We’ve had a significant number of our members provide generous contributions to CRCAG to assist in our operating costs – and for that we would like to express our most sincere gratitude. We’re all in this together and together we must share the burden.
New Volunteers
We’ve had several members step up this year to provide volunteer support to the Board and we would like to acknowledge their efforts:
- Rachel Kolber (Regulatory Committee)
- Lauren Bell (Regulatory Committee)
- Denise Volk (Community Outreach)
- Paul Fisher (Community Outreach)
- Scott Laird (Community Outreach)
- Geoff Granville (Community Outreach)
- Jean Woeller (Bow River Committee)
- Charlie Lund (Bow River Committee)
Communications
Earlier this year, we welcomed Erin Fahey to assist CRCAG with communications – in particular with our e-mail messages and social media content. I expect you’ve noticed the improvement. Thank you Erin for all you’ve done, it’s made a huge difference and lightened the load for Board members.
Have a wonderful holiday season and all the best in 2018!
