Tomorrow: Public engagement sessions on floodplain development regulations & mapping

November 24, 2025 by CRC Action Group in News

The City of Calgary is entering the phase 3 stage of public engagement for the Calgary River Valleys Project (CRVP)—a years-long initiative that will shape how homes and properties in flood-risk communities are regulated for decades to come. This phase begins this week, on Monday, November 24, and will include both open-house sessions and online engagement opportunities.

CRCAG has been actively monitoring and engaging with this project for years. We recently released our Position Statement, which outlines our high-level concerns and the principles we believe should guide fair, effective, and community-informed regulations. You can read it here:

👉 High-level overview about CRVP: Calgary River Valleys Project – Flood Hazard Mapping and Development Rules

These discussions matter. The CRVP is intended to create new development regulations—an overlay to Calgary’s Land Use Bylaw—based on the recently updated Flood Hazard Maps. These proposed rules will guide how buildings can be constructed, renovated, or redeveloped in neighbourhoods identified as being at risk of flooding. Once finalized, the regulations will apply to many communities along the river corridor.

However, it is important to note that specific draft regulations—the detailed rules that will directly impact individual homeowners—have not been released until now. This next engagement window is the first opportunity for residents to see the proposed development rules in full, understand how they may affect their property, and provide meaningful feedback to the City.

City of Calgary Open House Sessions

The City has announced three in-person sessions happening over the next week:

📍 Tuesday, November 25, 2025
Parkhill Community Association

4013 Stanley Road S.W.
5:00–8:00 p.m.

📍 Thursday, November 27, 2025
Riverbend Community Association
19 Rivervalley Drive S.E.
5:00–8:00 p.m.

📍 Saturday, November 29, 2025
Montgomery Community Association
5003 16 Avenue N.W.
12:00–3:00 p.m.

If you live in a flood-impacted community or own property near the river, we strongly encourage you to attend one of these sessions. This is a critical chance to understand the implications of the draft regulations and to ensure community perspectives are heard before the policy is finalized.

Online Engagement

In addition to in-person events, the City will host online opportunities to review materials and submit feedback. Details and links will be available on the project webpage:
