In April 2021, the Alberta government extended its Modified Operations Agreement with TransAlta for another 5-year term.
Originally signed in 2014 and extended for 5-years in 2016, the agreement allows the government to modify operations at several TransAlta facilities to help protect communities along the Bow River against the impacts of both floods and drought.

Upstream mitigation on the Bow River is critical
Although we’re more protected on the Bow River than we were in 2013, with the TransAlta agreement and local mitigation projects completed or underway (listed below), there is still the possibility a flood event could happen.
- Downtown Barrier (from Jaipur Bridge to the Reconciliation Bridge)
- Sunnyside-Hillhurst Barrier
- Bowness Barrier (on hold)
- Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant
You’ll remember, a relocated and expanded Ghost Reservoir is one of three short-listed options for a Bow River upstream reservoir. Stay tuned for a more fulsome update on the Bow River – coming shortly.
