In early January, the Government decided to continue with demolition of the homes they purchased as a result of the 2013 flood. At the time of the announcement the Minister and the Government promised to consult affected neighbours and communities.
After looking closely at the options available to support the future of your neighbourhood, the Government felt that proceeding with demolition is the best solution. They gave two primary reasons for this decision:
- Most of these homes sustained significant flood damage, and a lack of timely remediation work has contributed further to their state of disrepair.
- Selling homes that are located in a floodway prior to the completion of flood mitigation would expose Alberta taxpayers to significant liability risks.
The Government and the City of Calgary are investigating the future use of these lands through a range of studies that are currently underway.
Further consultation will be occurring in 2016 as the costs, benefits, and risks of various mitigation and land use options are investigated.
The Government wishes to determine what to do with these properties between the time these homes are demolished and the time flood mitigation work is complete. As they consider next steps, they are asking for your input and ideas.
