Bragg Creek flood mitigation scheduled ahead of Springbank Project

Bragg Creek projected to secure flood mitigation two years before the Springbank Project is completed

Recent updates to the Bragg Creek Flood Mitigation Project website disclose a projected completion date of November 2019; two years in advance of the projected completion for the Springbank Off-Stream Diversion Reservoir Project, in the best case scenario.

Despite what the Springbank Project opponents constantly suggest, upstream communities (Bragg Creek and Redwood Meadows) are building local area mitigation such as berms, as part of the overall Springbank Project cost, and are far from forgotten in receiving the protection they need from future flooding to the same standard as offered by the Springbank Project. Just as has and will be done in Calgary, local area mitigation is the right choice for the right spots along the waterway (remember that approx. $43 million has been committed to these upstream communities to date).

And while rarely reported, we know that many residents in these communities would much prefer to see protection now through this local mitigation rather than gamble on the designing, engineering, environmental studies, regulatory approval and funding contingencies of a large scale project like the McLean Creek In-Stream Dam, which will take years.

And they should: CRCAG has advocated that these local projects should be completed even though the entirety of the Springbank Project plan, which includes the cost for these local efforts, has not seen regulatory approval at this time.

So the communities in which a few of the most vocal opponents to the Springbank Project reside are seeing the construction of effective flood mitigation before the Springbank Project itself is even approved, with our support. After all, this is all about safety to lives, the environment and property, and we want to see the best and most cost effective projects undertaken as quickly as possible, to benefit as many people as possible.

Don’t forget! Write to the Federal Environment Minister requesting that she NOT refer the Springbank Project to a public panel.

Thank you to all that have already done so; we appreciate your support!
